Each of these parks offers unique landscapes, wildlife, and safari experiences. Here are some must-visit safari parks in Tanzania, aside from the Serengeti: Ngorongoro Conservation Area The Ngorongoro Conservation Area is famous for the Ngorongoro Crater, the world’s largest inactive, intact, and unfilled volcanic caldera. The crater floor is a natural sanctuary for thousands of animals, including lions, elephants, rhinos, buffalos, and leopards, making it one of the few places in Africa where you can see the Big Five in one day. The conservation area also includes Olduvai Gorge, an important archaeological site. Tarangire National Park Best known for its elephant herds, baobab trees, and tree-climbing lions, Tarangire National Park offers a more secluded safari experience. The Tarangire River is the park’s lifeline, attracting a variety of animals during the dry season. Bird enthusiasts will also enjoy the park, as it hosts over 300 bird species. Its vast plains, dense forests, and seasonal lakes attract huge concentrations of wildlife, including hippos, crocodiles, and buffalo. The park’s isolation makes it a perfect destination for those looking to escape the crowds. Lake Manyara National Park Famous for its tree-climbing lions, flamingos, and breathtaking scenery, Lake Manyara National Park is a small but diverse park. The alkaline Lake Manyara attracts hundreds of bird species, and the park’s varied landscapes range from savannah to marshland to forest. It’s an excellent spot for a day trip or a stopover on the way to Ngorongoro Crater. Mahale Mountains National Park Located on the shores of Lake Tanganyika, Mahale Mountains National Park is renowned for its population of wild chimpanzees. Trekking through the rainforest to observe these primates in their natural habitat is a unique and unforgettable experience. Depending on your arrival time, you may have your pre-safari briefing today; if not, it will take place early tomorrow morning. Day 2: Arusha – Tarangire National Park – Karatu (152.7 Km/2.45 Hrs Drive) Unless your arrival time yesterday allowed time for your safari briefing, then this will take place after breakfast. We will provide you with all the essential information, before we set off westwards to our first safari destination, Tarangire National Park. The park is best known for its elephant herds, savannah, baobab trees, seasonal swamps and the life-giving Tarangire River. Animals gather at the river and giraffes, bushbucks and hartebeests are often seen. With a bit of luck you might even spot the fringe-eared oryx or the weird-looking gerenuk. The park is also home to buffaloes, zebras and wildebeests which are always closely followed by a range of predators such as lions. Leopards are seen every once in a while but cheetahs are rarely spotted. From the open roof of the vehicle you will be able to absorb the landscape and watch the animals. In late afternoon, we will go to your accommodation for our evening meal and our overnight stay. Welcome to the Tarangire! Day 3: Tarangire NP – Karatu Town (135 Km/2.30 Hrs Drive) After a hearty breakfast you will head out on another game drive in the Tarangire National Park. During the dry season between June and October, the Tarangire River is the only permanent source of water and the wildlife tends to concentrate in its vicinity. You will stop at one of the picnic spots for lunch. In the afternoon, you leave this beautiful park behind. Passing through the multi-cultural town of Mto wa Mbu, the higher lands are soon reached and wonderful views of the Masai Plains and the Lake Manyara open up before you. After the obligatory photo stop, you will make your way to the vegetation-rich crater highlands, Accommodation at karatu town. Day 4: Karatu – Ngorongoro Crater – Serengeti National Park (53Km/1Hr – 145Km/3.5Hrs Drive) After breakfast, drive towards the Serengeti National Park via the beautiful high lying farmland of Karatu and the Ngorongoro Conservation Area, you will drive into the Ngorongoro Conservation Area and down into the Ngorongoro Crater. Grass steppes and acacia forests are home to almost all the species of animals found in the East African savannah. In only a few hours, you have the chance of spotting the “Big Five” (lion, elephant, buffalo, rhino and leopard). After extensive game viewing and a picnic in the crater, you will leave the highlands of Ngorongoro in the afternoon and continue to the Serengeti. You will soon see the seemingly endless plains of the southern Serengeti and finally reach the Seronera Valley in the central Serengeti. Day 5: Central Serengeti NP – Northern Serengeti NP (145 /3.5 Hrs Drive) After breakfast, we undertake our en route game drive to the Northern region of the Serengeti. Stretching from Seronera for about 100km, the Northern Serengeti is a gentle rolling countryside broken by small rivers, occasional hills, and kopjes. Here resides a multitudinous permanent population of wildlife, with also very striking geological occurrences such as the beautiful Lobo Kopje. The Northern Serengeti is an interesting and varied country that is far from the park’s main entry point in the south hence receiving fewer visitors. The migration is found in this area during August and we may with luck witness the most spectacular of river crossings as the herd attempt to cross the Mara River and avoid the strong currents and hungry crocodiles. After a full day, we head for our accommodation where we will enjoy our dinner and overnight stay under the magnificent African sky out upon the ‘Endless Plain’ Day 6: Full Game Drive in Northern Serengeti National Park / River Crossing After an early breakfast, you will head out to make the most of the day. There is a chance you may see the animals crossing the Mara River. Hundreds of thousands of desperate wildebeest gather together on the banks of the river, gazing wistfully across the turbulent water at the green grass on the other side but no animal will make a move. All it takes is one brave wildebeest to take the literal plunge and, then, all follow! The animals that do successfully avoid the awaiting crocodile jaws and make it over the river are rewarded with the lush green grazing grass of the Masai Mara. Day 7: Northern Serengeti NP – Central Serengeti NP (121Km/3Hrs Drive) After breakfast, you will return to Seronera with further opportunities to experience the incredible wildlife and natural beauty of the Serengeti. Apart from the migrating herds, we may have the opportunity to see the resident predators, leopard, cheetah, and lion, fulfilling their role in the circle of life. After an extensive game drive we head for our Accommodation for a hearty dinner and another night by the fire of relaxation and conversation under the sweeping majesty of the star bright African night out upon the ‘Endless Plain’. Along the tour, you will stop at Mto wa Mbu for morning cultural tour which will be accompanied with hot local lunch, and the afternoon game drives into Lake Manyara NP. The park with its shallow alkaline lake is known for its over 400 bird species, primate-filled forests (look out for the long-tailed Guenon monkeys) and grassy plains. A large area of the park is covered by the alkaline Lake Manyara which is home to colonies of flamingos and other water birds. Apart from elephants, you might also spot giraffes, hippos, wildebeests and impalas while the forests near the lake are teeming with noisy groups of monkeys and baboons. From the pop-up roof of the safari vehicle you will be able to absorb the sights and sounds of nature. Leaving the highlands behind, you will travel into the heart of wild Africa You will arrive in time for picnic lunch and enjoy an afternoon game drive into the park. Day 4: Full Game Drive in Serengeti National Park After breakfast, game viewing drive along the Sogore River Circuit, which loops into the plains south of the Seronera River, and which is good for possible Lion, Thomson gazelle, topi, ostrich and cheetah sightings. The Visitor Centre close to the Serengeti Seronera Lodge and public campsites is well worth a visit after the morning’s game drive. In the afternoon, you will follow the Kopjes Circuit, which goes anti-clockwise around the Masai Kopjes, which usually attract a number of lion and some formidably large cobras. Kopjes are weathered granite outcrops, scattered around the plains, most of which are miniature ecosystems, providing shade and drinking water in pools left in the rock after the rains. This makes the kopjes particularly good for spotting wildlife in the dry seasons – including lions, which like to lie in wait for animals coming to drink. Day 5: Full Game Drive in Serengeti National Park On this day will offer you an ideal opportunity to do an optional but unforgettable Hot Air Balloon flight, followed by a delightful champagne breakfast (available at a supplementary cost, but can be booked in advance). After breakfast you will be heading to the south-eastern side of the park, visiting the Barafu Kopjes and the Ngare Nanyuki River area, for your morning and afternoon game drives. Apart from the lion prides you find in the area, the Barafu Kopjes is the place to visit for possible cheetah sightings. The Ngare Nanyuki River area is also well known for being packed with game. Day 6: Serengeti National Park – Ndutu Area (121Km/3Hrs Drive) Today is your last day in the park, and once again you will visit some kopjes on your way out of the park and you will do a morning game drive in the Simba Kopjes area. The kopjes are named after the lions, which frequently use these kopjes to just lie and bath in the sun. You may also see baboon, giraffe and some interesting birds in this area. From there you will be heading to Lake Ndutu, which is alkaline, like most of the other Rift lakes, however still drinkable and used by a wide array of local wildlife. You will do an afternoon game drive in the lake area, which offers quite a change from the vast open plains of the Serengeti. The area is usually heavily populated with elephant and birds as well as resident plains game. Day 7: Ndutu Area – Ngorongoro Crater (99 Km/2 Hrs Drive) You will depart after breakfast from Ndutu Area with picnic lunch for a morning game drive in the Naabi Hill area before heading towards the Ngorongoro Conservation Area Authority via the famed Olduvai Gorge, also known as “the cradle of mankind”. The Gorge lies on the site of an ancient lake, covered by thick layers of volcanic ash, which carefully preserved the world’s earliest records of mankind and which was unearthed by the dedicated Leakey family. The museum displays some of these fascinating discoveries and remarkable finds. From there you will be heading for the magnificent NCAA, one of the most densely crowded game areas in the world, which is home to an estimated 30,000 animals, you will arrive in time for leisure. Day 8: Full Game Drive in Ngorongoro Crater After an early breakfast, you will descend
